We're here to have prayer and searching the scriptures together. The Bible says, Jesus says, where two or three are gathered together in my name, I'm in their midst. So I'm sure there's two or three of us that are here in his name. Amen? Amen. So he's right here in our midst with us. It's good to see everyone tonight. We're going to have just a short word of prayer and we'll sing and then we'll go into a time of prayer together. And then after that, we will jump into the word together. Heavenly Father, we bow before you right now with great praise and adoration in our hearts. We thank you so much for this time that we have to gather together in your house, sing praise to your name, to pray together as a church family and to seek your truth in your word. Lord, we love you and we give you glory tonight, give you thanks tonight. In the powerful name of Jesus Christ, our Lord, we pray. Amen. God bless y'all. Let's sing. We are going to sing two songs this evening, both of which mentioned all three iterations of the Trinity and sort of what the function is of each of those iterations. Let me just call your attention to some of these requests, and then we want to open up the floor for anyone else that has a prayer request that you would like to share. I want to begin tonight with Amy Warth. We pray for Amy every week, but in the past couple of days, she's had to go back to the hospital, and she's had a major regression in her process. So, Amy needs our prayers. Obviously, her brother, Andy, needs our prayers. So, we just need to be in prayer for Amy, her husband, John. They've got three kids. They just need our prayers. Also, Dottie Dunn needs our prayers as well. So, please continue to be in prayer for Dottie and for Judy Erdman, who's under hospice care. Linda Blair does have an ablation coming up on October 21st. We need to be in prayer for that procedure. And then, over here on the first line, Josh McMurray, the man that had the liver transplant and got saved at church. He was here Sunday morning, folks. He sure was. He was here with his wife and his father-in-law. He sat right back there. So, it's good to see him at church. All right. That is all that I have just at the beginning. Do you have prayer requests tonight? Feel free to open your mouth and tell us. Pastor, still remember Donna Brodigan in prayer? And, again, you mentioned it earlier. I want to mention, and I tell you, Monday night was a wonderful worship experience. And, be praying for next Monday night as we continue in God's ways. Amen. Thank you for that. We certainly need to be in prayer for Donna. She needs our prayers for sure. And, next Monday night's going to be great. Great, too. I'm so excited for that service. So, I have two requests. And, you don't really have to put this on for next week. But, one is, I'm going to throw my sister, Carolyn, under the bus here. But, don't anybody tell her I said this. So, our other sister fell at her house on Friday. And, she broke her kneecap. And, nobody called me until yesterday. So, she had surgery this morning. It was a success. And, she's doing good. Her name is Sarah Gosney. And, the other one is, I have a cousin who passed away this morning. His name is Tom Roberts. He had cancer, and it went very quickly. So, if you could just remember his family. Alright. Let's be in prayer for Sarah Gosney. Had the surgery. She'll heal quickly. Let's be in prayer for the Tom Roberts family. Someone else? Yes, Priscilla is now home from the hospital. She got to go home. And, the test that they did came back very well. So, she's doing well. She is at home, though, now. Thank you for bringing her up. Someone else? Okay. Let's be in prayer for Ray Saner's daughter. Her name is Sarah. And, she's dealing with cancer. Pastor Chad, my husband, Mark, is going to have surgery on November 11th. If you could just keep him in your prayers, I would appreciate it. Alright. Let's be in prayer for Mark. Surgery on the 11th of November. My wife asked me to put her sister-in-law on the prayer list tonight. Her name is Carol Miller. She had a significant amount of, she had a surgery recently and had a significant amount of her colon removed. She, I've known for years, she's a real severe diabetic. And, you know how that goes when it comes to healing. So, she's really in a tremendous amount of pain. And, it's not healing to the rate they had hoped. So, that's Carol Miller. Thank you. Alright. Let's be in prayer for Carol Miller. Someone else? Yes, Phil Long, who's, him and his wife are good standing members here. Phil's going to have knee replacement next Wednesday on the 20, no, Thursday on the 22nd. Phil Long. Also, tonight, they're not here with us, but let's be in prayer for Bonnie, Carol Bonnie Combs, Bonnie Combs. She is scheduled to have eye surgery at Edgewood. So, we need to be in prayer for Bonnie as she's having this surgery. Anyone else? Alright. Well, let's bow together and have a word of prayer. After we do that, we'll get into our study this evening. Heavenly Father, we come before you right now with great praise and thanksgiving and adoration in our hearts and in our souls. Father, we thank you for who you are. You are the one true and living God. We thank you for the many ways you bless us every single day. So thankful for your grace tonight. We just pray tonight that you would be exalted and lifted up in this place. Father, this evening as we're praying, there are several folks that are just always on our hearts, always on our minds. We thank you especially tonight of Amy Worth with this setback that she is experiencing right now. We pray that you would be with her husband John and the Kellys and her whole family. God, just bless them as they're helping her, walking with her through this time. Lord, we also want to lift up today Dottie Dunn, Judy Erdman. Just want to pray that you would be with them, that your presence would be real, that you would be with them there at home. Lord, we pray for Josh tonight. We're so grateful he was able to come to church Sunday. We know you're doing a great work in his life and in the life of his family. So Lord, we just pray that you'll continue to bring healing to his body and that you'll continue to help him. Lord, we want to lift up Donna to you tonight, Donna Brodican. Lord, she's not been feeling well. We know, God, that you are in a great position. We just pray you would tend to Donna, that you would be with her and she would be back with us very, very soon. Lord, we also want to pray this evening for Sarah Gosling. Just pray that you would be with her as she's recovering from this procedure. We want to pray for the Tom Roberts family. Lord, as they are mourning the loss of Tom, we pray you would be near to them. Lord, we're praying as well tonight for Sarah tonight, Ray's daughter, who's dealing with a very difficult sort of cancer. We pray you would be with her. We pray you would help her through this time and we pray, God, that you would bring healing to her body if it would be your will. Lord, tonight we want to pray for Jackie's husband, Mark, as he prepares for this procedure in November, as well as Linda Blair as she's preparing for a procedure. We just pray that you would be with them. We also lift up Bonnie Combs to you as she's having eye surgery today, that you would be with them. Lord, we also tonight want to pray for Carol Miller, that she would recover despite her diagnosis. Diabetes, we pray you bring healing to her body and that you would help her. We also pray for Phil Long, that she would be with his brother. Father, we thank you for how you have been with Priscilla Roberts and how she's home now. We thank you for how you moved here on Monday night. Thank you so much for both the music and the preaching. We give you glory for all of it. We pray for this coming Monday as you are leading and guiding us, directing us. I pray you would be with Adam as he comes to share your word. I also pray that you would be with our music person that night, Mark. We just pray your blessings on these services, that they continue to bring renewal and revival to the life of our church and to each one of us individually. We love you and we praise you tonight. In the powerful name of Jesus, amen. Well, we're going to continue a series that we started last Wednesday night on, of all things, the doctrine of the Trinity. Now, tonight is not going to be the most invigorating study you're ever going to hear. Can I just say that? Tonight is going to be a little bit more study oriented, okay? We're going to talk tonight, in fact, about Trinitarian heresies. I want to talk to you about why we're doing that. Last Wednesday night, we started with an overview of the doctrine of the Trinity. We talked about how the Trinity is foreshadowed in the Old Testament, how it's fully revealed in the New Testament. Then we talked about, really, an overview of the doctrine of the Trinity. Remember the definition that we're working with, it's in your guide tonight as well, that God eternally exists as three persons, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Each person is fully God and there is one God. We've kind of developed that definition from Wayne Grudem, obviously. Now, we also talked about how there's three truths that are essential to that definition being right. We talked about those too. God is three distinct persons. Each person is fully God and there is one God. Any of those are left out, you do not have the doctrine of the Trinity. You have something less than that. Now, what I just said to you in about two paragraphs took 2,000 years of church history to develop. That's just the truth. This understanding of the doctrine of the Trinity did not happen overnight. What I want us to see this evening is that over 2,000 years of church history, there have been many distortions of the doctrine of the Trinity. Now, what we need to understand is that the church does not dictate what the church believes. The church does not dictate what the church believes. The Bible dictates what the church believes. We know that. The Bible is our guide. However, while the church does not dictate what we believe, the church does have an obligation to speak out whenever a teacher teaching is outside the boundaries of what Scripture teaches. Oftentimes, responding to errors and that helps us to summarize our beliefs. So tonight, what I want us to do is go back through the major deviations of the doctrine. Now, you might say, Pastor, are you serious? Yes, I'm serious. You might say, is this necessary? History is boring. I'm not interested in what happened in the past. Well, my response to that is to say, first of all, history is not boring. It's not. History is exciting. It's all in your attitude of how you look at it. And it is necessary. It is. Those who do not study history are doomed to repeat it. So, sometimes you need to study the history of these things so that you don't repeat the doom that's in those things. So I promise you this is incredibly relevant to us understanding the doctrine. It's relevant because I hear folks all the time trying to explain the Trinity and they use terrible, bad analogies. Analogies that actually revive centuries-old heresies in the life of the church condemned hundreds of years ago. And we don't want to do that. So, we'll look at each of these heresies in their historical context. How the Bible and the church refuted them. And how they're still alive today in some ways. I suppose, before I get into my main list of heresies, I might just list one. And I won't take much time on it because of its lack of biblical defense. And that is tritheism. Tritheism. That's the belief that God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit are in fact three gods and not one. And that is a falsehood. That is heresy. Because while God has three persons, He is one God. So we don't believe in three gods. We believe in one God revealed as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Now, let's go through this list. The first one I want to call your attention to is called modalism. Modalism. I suppose we're starting by looking at the thoughts of a man by the name of Sibelius. Who lived in Rome in the early 3rd century. He was a man who raised up a doctrine, a way of thinking called modalism. And this is what modalism is. Modalism is a teaching that says there is one person who appears to us in three different forms or modes. One person who appears to us in three different forms or modes. Now the thinking behind this teaching that Sibelius popularized went back to a group called the Gnostics. The Gnostics. Who were a pesky bunch of folks from church history. And that's all I'm going to say about them. I can't get into all they believed. But there was an idea that God had one eternal form. And that He took on different forms in all of nature. You might think tonight about dropping a rock in a pond. The ripples that move out from the core are all emanating from that core. So he was saying all reality is an emanation of the person of God. We referred to this briefly last week. This teaching would say, modalism would teach us, that God appeared to us in the Old Testament as Father. But, that in the Gospel He changed modes and God appeared to us as Jesus. But then, when we got to the book of Acts, God changed His mode again and He became the Holy Spirit. So in the Old Testament He's Father, in the Gospels He's Jesus, and then in the book of Acts and following that He is the Holy Spirit. But this is not correct. Because what does it do? It corrupts text like the baptism of Jesus. Because right there in the Gospel of Matthew, what do we see? We see Jesus going to John the Baptist and being baptized. We see the Spirit descending from Heaven. And we see the Father saying, this is my beloved Son in whom I am well pleased. That is not one God speaking and one God doing, it's one God as a Trinity right there. Also, there are texts like the one where Jesus is praying to the Father. Now how does He pray to Himself? You see what I'm saying. If you take away the texts that speak of Jesus or speak of the Holy Spirit interceding for us, you have just a bunch of confusion that is not biblically correct. And this church, this view that we're talking about right now, was condemned by the church in AD 12. 267 at Antioch. But we see this doctrine used in analogies today. People trying to give a sensible explanation of the Trinity and so they use these analogies. How many of you heard folks say that the Trinity is like water? Have you ever heard that one? Yeah, the Trinity is like water. Water can be frozen, that's ice. Or the water can also be liquid, that's water. And the water can also be vapor. But really what is that definition, bad definition, telling us? It's telling us that God isn't three distinct persons, but one person who shows up in three different forms. When it's obvious all throughout the Bible that the Father is a distinct person, the Son is a distinct person, and the Holy Spirit is a distinct person. People will say that the Trinity is like a man, one man. And that one man can be a husband, he can be a father, and an employer. That's not the good definition of the doctrine of the Trinity though, because the Lord is God over all. And He is a Father to all. He is overall Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So modalism is the first heresy. Second, Arianism. Arianism. Now this came about from a man named, of all things, Arius. Now Arius was the Bishop of Alexandria, and this was his teaching. This is what he taught in Arianism. God the Son was at one point created by God the Father. And before that time, the Son did not exist, nor did the Holy Spirit, but only the Father. Therefore, since He was the first creation, Jesus, He is above all the rest of creation. He is not on the same level as the Father, not on the same level as the Father, but because He's the first created by the Father, He is obedient to the Father, and He's made to be the Son of God. Arius would use Scripture to promote this teaching. By the way, most all false teachers will use Scripture to promote their false teaching. You just need to know that. And the chief one of that is Satan himself. Satan will use Scripture to back up his lies that he's telling to us. But texts that say Jesus is the begotten Son, like Colossians 115, He is the image of the invisible God, the firstborn of all creation. Or he would use texts like Hebrews chapter 1 verse 3, He is the radiance of the glory of God. This view became insanely popular in church history, so much so that this doctrine on like the most popular view in church history, to the place that Arius wrote songs, wrote songs, and children would run about in their neighborhoods singing songs that say there was a time when He was not about Jesus. So all of this confusion, singing, immense popularity of this doctrine is awful because it's not true. It's not the truth of the Bible. So God raised up a hero in the midst of all of this error and he was not popular. He was not looked upon with great affinity. He was probably in the minority, but he stood on the Word of God and his name was Athanasius. He championed the language of the Nicene Creed from AD 325, which said in part, I'm just going to quote it, we believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of all things visible and invisible, and in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, begotten of the Father and only begotten, that is of the essence of the Father, God of God, light of light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father. So Jesus was never created. He is I am. He is God. God is not a created one. He is the creator of all things. And so that is falsehood. That is area. A third wrong interpretation is something that we would call partialism. Now it has less historical components, but it's listed by theologians as a hair or radical stance. Then the same partialism taught that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit together are components of one God. This led them to believe that each of the three persons of the Trinity is only part God, only becoming fully God when they come together. Now, a bad illustration of this that's used sometimes to teach the doctrine of Trinity is the clover. And maybe you ever heard of Trinity is like a clover. It has three pieces, you know, and all the three pieces come together and there you have one, even though there's three parts to the clover, they come together as one. That's a terrible illustration because while God is one God, he is three distinct persons in that Godhead, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. So this is what we're talking about when we talk about these heresies of the doctrine of the Trinity. God is not a God of falsehood. God has got a truth. And I'm thankful tonight for our scriptures. God clearly teaches the doctrine of the Trinity in his Word. But I'm equally as grateful tonight for those men who God raised up in church history like Athanasius and other great men of God who saw falsehoods being proclaimed and stopped those falsehoods by proclaiming the truth. And that's how we've developed what we understand from the Bible to be the doctrine of the Trinity. All right. I'm so glad we're done with that study because I could tell you all were just absolutely engrossed in that. But sometimes folks, sometimes, now listen to me on this, sometimes to get to really good stuff in Bible studies, you have to go into the mire of other things. I promise you this was worth it. Because when we talk about the mysterious nature of the Trinity, and when we talk about the Trinity in your life, and those are the two lessons that are coming, you're going to see, ah, I'm glad we talked about those heresies. And I'm glad we got to that so that we can get the best. All right. Let's be closed in a word of prayer tonight. So good to see each and every one of you this evening. Let's pray. Lord, we love you this evening. We thank you that you are one God. And we're thankful that you reveal yourself to us as Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. In fact, even right now in our prayer, we know, Father, we're praying to you, but we're also praying. We're praying tonight through the shed blood of your Son, Jesus, who opened a new and living way by which we could come into your presence. And we know we're praying in the Spirit. So God, without you being who you are, we would never be able to have a relationship with you. Thank you for the gift of prayer. And in that, we thank you for the Trinity. Lord, we love you tonight. Lord, we thank you that you're with us as we go through the rest of our week. Bring us back together on Sunday morning as we worship and lift up the name of Jesus.
