Can Cornette's mother, she passed away Friday, 96, and I imagine there would be arrangements to come through email or something on the church site. So with that, let's go to Lord and Prayer. Our Grace the Seventhly Father, we just thank you for another time that we can come to not only Christian fellowship, but learn through the Bible study tonight. And Lord, each one of us has a prayer on our heart, and most probably each one of us has a prayer list as long as the one that's published here. And Lord, just be with Ralph as he brings us the Bible study tonight. And Lord, we just pray all these things in your precious name. Amen. We're going to give you an opportunity to stand with us if you'd like and get a hymnal before you stand up on your way up, get one of those hymns out, and let's turn to page 547, I am amazed in the presence. We'll sing the first, second, and last stanzas of this. I stand amazed in the presence of Jesus the Nazarene, and wonder how he could love me. A sinner condemned and cleaned. I searched with my heart how to cheer my body with wine, my heart still guiding me with wisdom, and how to lay hold of folly, till I might see what was good for the children of man to do under heaven during the few days of their life. I made great works, I built houses and planted vineyards for myself, I made myself gardens and parks and planted in them all kinds of fruit trees, and I made myself pools from which to water the forest of growing trees. I bought male and female slaves and had slaves who were born in my house. I had also great possessions of herds and flocks and more than any who had been before me in Jerusalem. I also gathered for myself silver and gold and the treasure of kings and provinces. I got singers, both men and women, and many concubines, the delight of the sons of man. So I became great and surpassed all who were before me in Jerusalem. Also, my wisdom remained with me, and whatever my eyes desired, I did not keep from them. I kept my heart from no pleasure, for my heart found pleasure in all my toil. And this was my reward for all my toil. Then I considered all that my hands had done and the toil that I had expended in doing it. And behold, all was vanity and a striving after the wind, and there was nothing to be gained under the sun. So what we're doing in making this comparison between Ecclesiastes chapter 2 and Psalm 119 is we're comparing pursuit of pleasure. We think that we have that right. Maybe even as believers we may feel that we have that right as believers to pursue pleasure. Well, let's consider another alternative that we have presented in Psalm 119. So if you would look at what we have in Psalm 119 verses 57 through 64. Now, before I start reading, I want to explain that if it's been a while since you've been in Psalm 119, I just want to remind you briefly how it's structured. It's structured in what they call stanzas. So there's 176 verses in Psalm 119, and there are 22 8 verse stanzas. So that is how the Psalm is broken apart or is broken up. In each stanza, there are approximately eight words that are used in each of the groupings. And eight verse groupings of each stanza. And those words are different words that are used for God's word. And so we'll, for instance, we'll see some of them are promise words, testimonies, rules, precepts, statutes, and law. Anyway, there is eight of them. We can't quite take the time to explain the differences, but in general, excuse me, they all refer to God's word. And so having said that, let's go ahead and now read verse 57 of Psalm 119 through 64. The Lord is my portion. I promise to keep your words. I entreat your favor and all with all my heart. Be gracious to me according to your promise. When I think on my ways, I turn my feet to your testimonies. I hasten and do not delay to keep your commandments. Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me, I do not forget your law. At midnight I rise to praise you because of your righteous rules. I am a companion of all who fear you, all of those who keep your precepts. The earth, oh Lord, is full of your steadfast love. So let's make the quick comparison, get right to it at the end. What is the comparison of pursuing pleasure compared with the end result of pursuing my portion or our portion, who is the Lord? And we'll talk about what that is in a minute. The difference is, is if we pursue pleasure in just in itself as an end, that ends up resulting in vanity, pure emptiness. There's nothing. But at the end of this eight verse passage that we looked at in Psalm 119, in verse 64, it tells us, the Psalmist tells us that the earth, oh Lord, is full of your steadfast love. Teach me your statutes. This was his conclusion after what he said in the previous seven verses. So what we want to do for just a few minutes is let's go through verse by verse in these eight verses in Psalm 119. Let's first talk about what in the world is he talking about, what's the Psalmist referring to when he talks about his portion? Now, us as believers today, we can give quite a laundry list of what that would include. And we'll do that maybe in just a minute. But let's first talk about what the Psalmist had in mind. The portion, what did he mean? The word means something that someone lays claim to. Many want to honor wealth, fame, attention, pleasure, land. But the Psalmist was excited about the Lord God and his relationship with him. So to be able to lay claim to the Creator as one's portion is something. So what is, what did it mean to the Psalmist about it? The Lord was his portion. What is referred to in scripture about a portion is about the inheritance that one would receive. What is the portion of land? And if we go back and look at just exactly how things were with the different tribes, the twelve tribes of Israel, if you remember there's some passages that explain very well to us that Levi did not receive a portion of land. When they crossed over and went into the promised land, Levi didn't get anything in the way of land. But listen closely. Therefore, Levi, this is Deuteronomy 10 verse 9. Therefore Levi has no portion or inheritance with his brothers. The Lord is his inheritance as the Lord your God said to him. And then in Joshua 13 verse 14 to the tribe of Levi alone, Moses gave no inheritance. The offerings by fire to the Lord God of Israel are their inheritance as he has said to them. So the Levi got no inheritance. But we'll let's try to understand what they did receive. When thou, O Lord, thou art my portion, O Lord, nobody could take that away from the Psalmist as he was communicating this to us. His treasure was laid up in heaven and it couldn't be taken away. Thou art my portion and he continues on and says I will keep your words. Abraham knew what it was to be in a situation where his portion was questionable. He discovered that the Lord was his portion and that he had that sad experience with Lot, if you remember, over the matter of money. And then the land that was not big enough to support all of Abraham's cattle as well as Lot's. So Abraham gave way and he let Lot choose the portion of land that he wanted. So Lot chose based on sight and not by faith. And so Lot took the well-watered lands and plains of Jordan regardless of the character of the sodomites that inhabited the land. But as we learn later, it all ends up coming back to Abraham. And in Genesis 15 verse 1 it reads, After these things the word of the Lord came to Abraham in a vision, fear not Abraham, I am your shield, your reward shall be very great. So when we think of trying to pursue pleasure, the way that Solomon had outlined in chapter 2 of Ecclesiastes, and then we compare it with what the psalmist had said here in these few verses, I find it particularly striking. So when we think of the portion that we have as believers today, it may not be so much connected with a portion of land. As it is when we think of who God is, he is our righteousness, he's our strong tower, he's our peace. We can think of even only just the covenantal names of God, he is our good shepherd. And we could think on and when we try to compare what Solomon was doing in his experiment, and then with what the psalmist is saying, what the psalmist is saying is an alternate approach to seeking fulfillment. We seek fulfillment through knowledge of who God is, and by knowing his word. Let's read, reread verse 58, I entreat your favor with all my heart, be gracious to me according to your promise. Entreat, that's one of those words that we don't necessarily use that much, but it basically means I sought. And so the psalmist is saying here, I sought your favor. Now let's think for just a little bit about our favor, or sorry, your favor referring to the Lord. When we seek God's favor, what are we seeking? We're seeking his blessing. We're seeking to know him. We're seeking to see him and his fullness of his, we want to see the fullness of his glory, but we won't see that this side of heaven. But when the psalmist is saying that I have sought your favor, contrast that with what we see Solomon saying over in chapter 2 of Ecclesiastes. What was Solomon seeking? What was he seeking there? He was seeking pleasure. And at the end of the day, when you get down to verse 11, and he had done all these things, all these great projects that he had, but it resulted in him being empty. It was vanity. But as the psalmist, on the other hand, when he seeks the Lord as his portion, stating that the Lord is his portion, then he says that I've sought your favor. The person that has sin in their life has a hard time. In fact, I would say it's impossible to gain the Lord's favor. Seeking the Lord's favor is not so easy as being able to switch it on and off. It has to be a commitment that we are seeking his favor. What do we want the Lord's favor for anyway? Do we not all seek the Lord's favor? I would say yes that we do. We want his blessing. We don't want to go for some kind of false gratification of whatever it is we're looking for. We want to seek him. He said, the psalmist said, that I have sought your favor with all my heart. That's kind of telling in itself also is that it's not a part-time job seeking the Lord's favor. It's a continual thing that we seek. And then reading on, it says, as it continues in verse 58, be gracious to me according to your promises. Now God's promises could either have been written or spoken. And when I think on my ways in verse 59, the psalmist says, I turn my feet to your testimonies. And so this again is quite in contrast with what we see going on over in Ecclesiastes chapter 2. The psalmist implies that he has perhaps strayed from the Lord's way in the past. However, he has come to consider his ways and to evaluate what he has been doing. And he is reflected on the path taken by his feet. Do we see any indication of this as being a consideration over in Ecclesiastes? I don't think so. Because the entire focus of that passage is, I'm going to do whatever I can do to gratify myself. But when we get to where the psalmist is, and when we realize that the Lord is our portion, he is everything to us, then we seek to know him in every way that we can know him, to the depths that we may not have known him before. So we dig, we study, we learn. Then it read on in verse 60, it reads, I hasten and do not delay to keep your commandments. It was an urgent thing for the psalmist to be obedient to God's promises, to everything that he outlined here for us. It wasn't something that he could just set aside and I'll get to it tomorrow. It was something that had to be done now. That was an example of a person that would not hasten to do the Lord's commandments, would be a person that would have difficulty saying, Oh Lord, you are my portion. I have sought, or I have sought your favor. I'm sorry, but the Lord's favor is just not that way. It's seeking the truth of who he is. But it has to be, let me remind you of 2nd Corinthians 7, sorry, 2nd Chronicles 714. Think of how that verse reads, If my people who are called by my name will humble themselves and pray and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and heal their land. If they will seek my face. So seeking the Lord's favor is really seeking the Lord's face. Seeking to put a smile on the Lord's face with our obedience to him. That is what it means to seek the Lord's favor. Okay, let's read on in Psalm 30, or sorry, verse 61. Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me, I do not forget your law. It's like the wicked were trying to obstruct the psalmist from doing that which was right. But he says, though the cords of the wicked ensnare me, I do not forget your law. And then at midnight, I rise to praise you because of your righteous rules. Most of us, if we wake up at midnight, it's, that may not be the first thing on our mind. We're not supposed to get our eyes closed and back to sleep. But the God's word was so paramount to the psalmist. It was on his mind continually. I rise to praise you because of your righteous rules. Verse 63 reads, I am a companion of all who fear you. I'm a friend of all who fear you, of those who keep your precepts. Then in verse 64, the earth, oh Lord, is full of your steadfast love. And I will follow you in your statutes. The steadfast love thing is another word for it is mercy. This is the same word that's used in the 23rd song, Surely Goodness. And some versions say steadfast love. Surely goodness and mercy will follow me all the days of my life. I will be well in the house of the Lord forever. So this idea of pursuing the favor of the Lord is critical to us in realizing that the earth is full of his steadfast love. It's full of his mercy. And maybe tonight when you go home, look at Psalm 136. Psalm 136, there's 26 verses in that thing. And at the end of each verse it says, and the mercy of the Lord endures forever. It is a song, but it's interesting to note that his mercy, his steadfast love, goes on forever. That's not just the case with mercy. All of God's attributes, everything he does and all who he is, goes on forever. His truth goes on forever. His love goes on forever. His steadfast love is his, often is referred to as his covenant love, goes on forever. So whenever it started way back in eternity past that we don't know about, it doesn't matter. It goes on forever. And I think it's quite an eye-opening thing to see that God's attributes don't end, that they continue on. And to those of us that, or those of you that may have struggles from time to time in different areas of your life, keep in mind that God's not ready to give up on you yet. He's loved you with an everlasting love. We know that from Jeremiah 31.3. There's a couple of quotes that I wanted to point out to you and maybe you have some comments. One of the quotes that came across that I thought was good was by Charles Spurgeon. This is in the Golden Alphabet book. Those who have God for their portion long to have him for their teacher. Moreover, those who have resolved to obey are the most eager to be taught. I have said that I would rather keep thy words as beautifully succeeded by teaching me thy statutes. Another quote I came across that really meant a lot to me. It's hard for me to listen to Michael Reeves because he talks so slowly. But what he has to say is so good. And I found this in his book, In Delighting in the Trinity. What we love and enjoy is foundationally important. It is far more significant than our outward behavior, for it is our desires that drive our behavior. This is what is at the root of having God as our portion and seeking his favor in our lives. We seek your favor individually, but we as a church would ask that you protect us, that you guide us, that you guide our leaders in all areas, that you would draw us close to yourself and close to one another in Jesus' name.
